Prospera® Pd-103 MODEL MED3633

There are two types of radioactive material (called isotopes) commonly used in seed implantation - Palladium-103 and Iodine-125. Palladium-103 is the isotope used in Prospera devices. Palladium and Iodine seeds are nearly identical in appearance. Both are about the size of an uncooked grain of rice, are implanted the same way, and emit low energy radiation. The primary difference is the rate at which they give off their energy.

Prospera® Pd-103 (Model MED3633) Physical Characteristics

Prospera Pd-103 brachytherapy sources have a half-life of 16.99 days1 and decay by electron capture with the emission of characteristic x-rays at 20 - 23 keV and Auger electrons. The electrons are absorbed by the titanium wall of the capsule. Decay factors for activity calculations are provided in the "Palladium Decay Chart," which is included in the product information data sheet packaged with each Prospera shipment.

Each source consists of a welded titanium capsule containing the radioactive source absorbed onto four resin beads. Tow inactive gold beads serve as locations markers.

- The source strengths are provided in Apparent Activity (mCi) and
   air-kerma strength (U or µGym2/hr.).
- Air-kerma strengths are based on NIST’s 2000 corrected measurement
    for 99 WAFAC standard.
- An equivalence of 1 mCi (app) = 1.293 U has been used to convert

   air-kerma strength to Apparent Activity.2
- Sources in the same order may deviate from the midpoint by up to 4.8%.
